The shift from paper to electronic is clearly evident in the various sponsored project processes, which are collectively referred to as Electronic Research Administration (eRA). In its broadest application, eRA encompasses a completely paperless process spanning the entire life of a sponsored project -- beginning with proposal preparation and carrying through to internal routing, proposal submission, award acceptance, award authorization/notification, project monitoring, financial payment/reporting, and project closeout. The University of Iowa is currently focused on selected e-functions, developing its capabilities for electronic routing, application submission, award notification, and project tracking.
